05. What are the advantages of a CTM registration over other ways of trademark registration?

The main advantages of the Community Trademark system are the following:

1. The low fees and costs. The total costs of filing an application to register a CTM are much less than filing 25 separate National applications in all EU member states (Benelux is 1 application). Furthermore the total costs of filing are also much less than filing through the Protocol of Madrid system.

2. Easy administration. Rather than having to keep up an administration of various countries individually or as a part of a bundle of countries, the Community Trademark registrations are very easy to be administered as they each contain one uniform trademark right in 27 countries.

3. No limitations in classification. Rather than going through the bureaucratic ways of national trademark offices as well as being limited to the classification of a basic International Registration, the European Trademark Office offers a database with an ever expanding clear list of specified items that are allowed for classification.
